"Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."
Matthew 18:3
This painting was inspired by my reflection on Matthew 10, where Jesus points to the qualities of a child as an example of true faith. He is not speaking about childishness, but rather humility, trust, dependence, and openness toward God.
The young girl is captured in a moment of pure joy, reflecting the innocence, wonder, and freedom often associated with childhood. Children are often more willing to learn, quicker to trust, and more open to guidance than adults. Through her joyful expression and carefree spirit, I wanted to explore the childlike posture that Christ commends, one that is teachable, trusting, and humble.
As we grow older, we can become more guarded, self reliant, and hesitant to trust. 'Joy' serves as a reminder of the faith Jesus calls His followers to embrace, approaching God with the trust, openness, and wonder of a child.
